A Brief History of the Clearbrook Village Hall
The Clearbrook Village Hall was a Millennium Project, which united the community in the millennium year with a spirit of friendship.
The hall is a charity run by volunteers, a committee of twelve members from both sides of the river who meet monthly to plan village events and activities to raise funds to cover the upkeep of the hall.
The old hall was demolished and completely rebuilt in 2000, thanks to generous grants from the Lottery Fund and County, District and Parish Councils - plus of course strenuous efforts from the inhabitants.
The new hall was built on the site of the Reading Room, locally called the old tin shack. This old building also becoming a church in it's hundred year's history. Buried beneath the new hall is a time-capsule with items relevant to the year 2000 and a list of people living in the village at that time.
Now the residents of Clearbrook on the west bank of the river below Yelverton, and those of Hoo Meavy on the left bank across Hoo Meavy Bridge, together form the members of the Clearbrook Community Association.
All members of the community are encouraged to make use of the facilities in the hall. The IT room with connection to the Internet is a wonderful asset and there is also a photo copier for community use.
Outside the hall there is a granite seat which was given by Buckland Monachorum Parish Council in 2000. It was decided to place the seat on the flat piece of ground outside the hall where many walkers and cyclists like to sit and rest after coming up from the river.
This steep hill has been known as Arch Hill since the fine arch bridge was built over the road by the railway company in 1859.
